Perugia is an important historical and artistic center. Not far from here was born the famous painter Pietro Vannucci, nicknamed Perugino. He decorated the Sala del Cambio with a beautiful series of frescoes. Eight of his paintings can also be admired in the Umbrian National Gallery. Perugino was a teacher of the outstanding Renaissance artist Raffael, who painted five paintings and one fresco in Perugia. Another well-known painter Pinturicchio and the famous architect Galeazzo Alessi lived in the town.
