Poutní město Assisi (Italy)
A town with about 27,000 inhabitants lies about 20 km east of Perugien, a relatively steep southwest slope of Monte Subasio, under a rock with the remains of a medieval castle (Rocca maggiore) on top. From the Roman foundation on the terraces of the slope, the city walls, the former forum (now the Piazza delle Commune), the amphitheater and the temple of the goddess Minerva, rebuilt into the present-day Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, have been preserved.
